Michael L. McGaughy

Michael L. McGaughy, 74, of Moline, Illinois, died peacefully in his home with his son at his bedside on Sunday, November 5, 2023.

A memorial service is 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 11, at First Lutheran Church, Moline.  Memorials may be made to the Disabled American Veterans or to the River Bend Food Bank.

Michael was born April 21, 1949, in Monmouth, Illinois, to Lyal and Irene (Newman) McGaughy. He graduated from Winola High School. While at Winola, Michael participated in track and field, baseball, and basketball. During his senior year, Michael was crowned Prom King.

Michael then went on to study at Sterling College in Sterling, Kansas. He graduated with his Bachelor of Science degree before joining the military. Michael served in the Army and was initially stationed in Germany before going to Vietnam. Michael was honored with the National Defense Service Medal and the Marksman M16 award.

After serving in the military, Michael went on to teach 3rd grade at Winola Elementary School. It was there he met his spouse, Sandra McGaughy. They were wed in Viola.

Michael is proceeded in death by his beloved spouse, Sandra McGaughy, and his parents. He is survived by his brother, John McGaughy, and his son, Eric McGaughy.

Mike will be forever remembered for his kindness, generosity, and sense of humor. He enjoyed working in the yard, cooking on the grill, and spending time outdoors. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching football, basketball, baseball, and golf.

Mike also enjoyed keeping updated with the weather and would always know what the day's weather would bring (in almost any part of the country). Mike was a loving father and husband and adored his spouse, Sandy. They are now back together and are at peace.
