Dwain P. Fugate of Bettendorf, Iowa, died Sunday, July 6, 2025, at Celebrate of Moline, with his family by his side.
Cremation will take place at Trimble Crematory, Moline, Illinois, under the direction of Cremation Society of the Quad Cities. Memorials may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project in honor of Dwain’s service and sacrifice.
Dwain Paul Fugate was born on May 26, 1945, at the family home on Asbury Road in Erie, Pennsylvania, the youngest of five children born to Benjamin F. and Opal L. (Carner) Fugate. He graduated from McDowell High School in the Class of 1963, and soon after enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served bravely in Vietnam as a gunner on a Huey helicopter. During a mission, his helicopter was shot down, and he sustained serious injuries, including fractures to three lumbar vertebrae. For his service and sacrifice, he was awarded a Purple Heart.
In 1967, he married Kathleen Travis, and together they welcomed a daughter before going their separate ways. In October of 2007, Dwain met Cheryl Macey, the love he would spend the rest of his life with. They were married on July 4, 2013, in Wattsburg, Pennsylvania.
Dwain had a deep love for solving jigsaw puzzles and crossword challenges. He also enjoyed golfing and, thanks to Cheryl, developed a fondness for horseback riding. He delighted in making her happy and embraced the things she loved. After retirement, the couple enjoyed traveling abroad to places like Mexico and Panama, cherishing their adventures together. Above all, Dwain valued time spent with his grandchildren.
Dwain is survived by his wife, Cheryl; daughter, Diane Tetuan; step-children, Sean (Emily) Macey and Todd Macey; grandchildren, Hannah Tetuan, Chase Macey, Erik Macey, and Linnea Macey. He was preceded in death by his parents and all four siblings, Kenneth, Berniece, Barbara, and Beverly.
